WATERMAN'S W O O D G R A I N 55 " R E S T O R E D " EXCELENT CONDITION Large Lever Filling Fountain Pen Circa Mid-1920s 14K Semi-flex Nib with Fine Tip WATERMAN'S IDEAL NEW YORK 5 Super-Writer with No.5 Semi-flex-Plus Restored Lever-Filling System with New Ink Sac Yes, the pen looks great... Only a trace of brassing on clip, minimal spots on lever & none on cap band... Excellent color to polished hard rubber surfaces... Mechanically and functionally flawless, almost... * But . . . . Yes, t are a few minor issues to mention... in the order of my observations 1. Beautiful, but not in Mint or Near Mint condition ... The great color and glossy surfaces are likely the result of very careful restoration work. Note the very soft imprints on the barrel. 2. Style of filling lever not contemporary to clip ... ??? Reference book suggests clip is Circa Mid-1920s and the lever is Circa 1930s. The style of the barrel cut-out for the lever appears to be contemporaneous to the '20s cap clip ... So, the barrel and cap may match, but the lever is a later style which replaced the earlier round ended lever. 3. Threading on barrel looks odd or different ... Cap screws tight, but slightly askew ... Double cap rub lines ... compare to another 55 - see photo with BCHR 55 We note that other 55 is longer by about 1/8" So, my theory is that the front of the barrel was damaged, cracked or chipped. Restorer shortened and re-threaded the barrel with some skill and care, but a minor flaw results in the cap being very slightly out of alignment when screwed tight to barrel. ( other 55 BCHR cap screws on straight! ) ( Woodgrain cap screws on straight to BCHR barrel ??? ) A shortened barrel also explains the double cap rub lines on barrel, about 1/8" apart. Overall length is just shy of 5-1/2" closed and 6-7/8" with the cap posted. Originally, it was probably 5-1/2" closed and approx. 7" with the cap posted, like the black "55." Again, Yes, the pen looks great ... Yes, the pen is fully functional ... with large ink capacity, if an 1/8" short. Yes, the pen has a great writing No.5 nib ... with generous flex and good ink flow. But, it is not a "correct" specimen, given the apparent modifications. Please forward any questions or comments.
