Waymon Cole was born in 1905 and died in 1987. He was the son of J. B. Cole and ran the famous J. B. Cole Pottery in the Seagrove area with his sister Nell Cole Graves after their father's death in 1943. One measure of his skill is that certain North Carolina pottery forms such as the Aladdin lamp teapot and the accordion vase were technically so difficult to make that only Waymon Cole and a few other potters could master them. The vast majority of Waymon Cole's work over his years at J. B. Cole Pottery was unsigned, but in the 1980's he did begin to initial and date some pieces, as on the vase being offered today. This Waymon Cole "futuristic" vase (it resembles a flying saucer, in my opinion) is decorated in a beautiful dripping cobalt or sapphire blue glaze that is extremely popular with collectors. The glaze has great gloss and depth to it, with color variations and darker highlights in the blue that give an added appeal. The glaze is highly reflective as well - in the top-view photos, it's possible to see the reflections of trees from my yard, and one photo has my reflection while snapping the photo (t's probably a theory of relativity concept in t somew The shape of the piece is nearly identical to the body portion of Waymon's Aladdin lamp teapots, only finished off as a vase instead of with the addition of a spout and handle. read more
