Great STERLING silver WB compact purse in the "Piccadilly" style. Front frame work has an all over, top to bottom, linear pattern to the metal. T are also flowers & leaves etched into the frame. The compact has a laurel of scrollwork surrounding the personalized cartouche...engraved with what appear to be the initials "JML"? The compact opens by pulling down on the engraved metal tab at the bottom; revealing the tiny diminishing mirror set into the lid via a tiny metal frame. The compact would have been for cake powder...no puff present...and based on condition, not sure this was ever even used. Closes and opens securely and straight. Once you open the purse, via the blue cabochon thumbpiece, you find the interior of the purse. The maker's mark and metal content are impressed into the back of the compact (inside the purse compartment). This is "STERLING" made by the "WB" company...initials inside a diamond shape. Patented June 14, 1918 Pat # 52092. Reference similar item in "Vintage Vanity Bags & Purses" by R. Gerson page 109. T are a couple of places w the soldered mesh bag needs to be reattached to the frame...certainly don't detract from the beauty of this purse...and not even visible unless the bag is opened. Measures 8 3/4" from bottom-most of the 3 ball shaped drops, to the top of the decorative bale, and is 3 1/2" at the widest read more
