The Street in Cairo, at the 1893 World's Columbian Exposition, was not an exact duplicate of any particular street in Cairo. It was a combination of some of the chief architectural features of the old city. It was one block long and replete with theaters, camels, donkeys, dogs, and 180 native Egyptian men, women and children. It was designed by Max Herz, architect to the Khedive.
Wandering down the street, one found many hole-in-the-wall shops, obelisks, cafes, typical Egyptian homes, and a mosque complete with minaret. The first floors of the buildings were for commerce while the second floors were for living quarters. Also encountered was a Sudanese siwan which housed a Sudanese family, a Nubian hut (w the occupants did a native dance), and a reproduction of the Temple of Luxor. For sale is a folded leaflet entitled "Guide to the Tombs of Thi and Apis". The front shows a line drawing of Thi in a bark, sailing on the Nile amid fish and tall lotus plants. Inside is a simple schematic of the tombs of Apis and Thi. The back lists a few guides (this one among them, for 5 cents) and souvenirs. The folded size is 5 1/2 X 8 inches. These were printed on rather thin cheap paper which did not hold up well over time. Condition: Not great. T are several creases, some light wrinkling, and a 3/4 inch split at the top of the fold. T is substantial soiling, especially on the front and back. Still, a very rare and presentable paper item from the Streets of Cairo. We ship only within the United States and to Canada and to Europe. Payment will be by Paypal, post office or bank money order, or personal check (which will require a seven day waiting period for check to clear before shipping). T is NO handling charge. Item will be shipped by U. S. P. S. First Class ($2.00 which includes packaging and postage). Priority mail is available. Insurance is additional and optional. No sale is final until the buyer is happy with the purchase. The buyer has five days after receiving the item to email us of their intent to return it (for any reason). The buyer is responsible for all postage costs. Upon our receiving the item (in the same condition as sent), we will send the full purchase price refund in the form of a bank money order. Please email us with any questions that you may have. Thank you for viewing our auction.
