ARIEL'S SECRET GROTTO
Inspired by the animated classic THE LITTLE MERMAID, Ariel's Secret Grotto is the hiding place for the little sea princess's collection of human "treasures." Her "gadgets and gizmos galore" even include a true treasure inside the clam shell - a real pearl, glistening against a ray of sun breaking through the water. To magically create the illusion of being under the sea, the sculpting technique used gives the appearance of movement to the seaweed, while the hues used in painting this work of art capture the essence of underwater shadows and light. Ariel's Secret Grotto, from the Enchanted Places line, was first released in 1997. This particular piece underwent a production change shortly after production began. A note in the Nov/Dec 1997 NEWSFLASH from Walt Disney Collectors Society stated: Just as these spectacular new releases are about to hit the marketplace, we must make you aware of slight modifications recently made to the pieces. As for Ariel's Secret Grotto, it seems that early sculptures had one too many "thingamabobs." We inadvertently included two candelabras in the cavern instead of one. We have now corrected the sculpture, but some early pieces which are already on their way to retailers will feature both candelabras. The piece listed for sale is one of the original version, with 2 candelabras, as you can see from one of the pictures. The piece bears the music stand mark for 1997. The piece was retired in March 1999. Concept artist was Larry Nikolai, Sculptor was Valerie Edwards. The size of this piece is approximately 5" x 6.5" x 6.5". Ariel's Secret Grotto is a beautiful, but very delicate piece. Many that you see listed for sale will have some damage to the seaweed. This piece is new in the box, and was removed only for photographs. It has never been displayed. Plussing on this include real mother of pearl decorating the clam shell and candelabras made of pewter. The wood base has an engraved brass nameplate attached. The serial number for this piece is AGAA 628 which is engraved on the bottom of the piece and marked on the Certificate of Authenticity. Enchanted Places pieces come with a registration card that is sent in to "transfer title" to the new owner of property. The transferred title for this piece is included and is "signed" by the original owner of the property, Ariel. Original selling price of this piece was $175.00. I was only able to find a 2nd version, undamaged, listed for sale at $300.00. I am listing this piece with no reserve but starting at the original selling price, an opportunity for someone to get this very rare 1st version, with no damage, at a great price! Note: t is a miniature pewter Ariel made to go along with this piece. I do not have it, but it can be found on eBay. ALL SALES ARE FINAL PAYMENT SHIPPING
