Up for bid is a solid sterling example of the earliest work by the Eley & Fearn partnership. They first partnered in October of 1814 and remained a team until 1824. This spoon is of the first year of WE/WF, the transitional period of William Chawner splitting from the firm WE/WF/WC to form WC, Chawner & Co in 1815, London's most dominant force in silver flatware production of the 19th century. This spoon is hallmarked reading the following touch marks left to right: George III (tax); T (1814); Leopard (London); Lion passant (sterling); WE WF (Wm. Eley, Wm. Fearns), c lying cradled above. In addition to its historical provenance, this 9 inch(22.4 cm) spoon really shines on its own merit. It has clean lines of the classic Fiddle & Thread pattern , and boasts one of the single most ornate engravings I have seen, truly the work of a master engraver; I believe the lettering to be a flowing cursive J (see photo.) The large spoon shows only signs of normal use i.e., small nicks and light surface scratching; absolutely no damage or repairs. Without sparing any sterling content, this sturdy spoon weighs in at a hefty 89.4 grams, twice as heavy as a comparable american serving spoon.
