NEW STORM GLASS BAROMETER WEATHER STATION In an era when forecasting was art relying on clues from nature, the weather glass barometer, much like the one offered , was one of the few tools based on a newly discovered scientific principle that weather was influenced by variations in atmospheric pressure. Also known as a "storm glass" or "water barometer", this instrument dates back to the 17th century when Torricelli (1608 - 1647 ) devised his first barometer. The storm glass quickly indicates any variations in atmospheric pressure. When high pressure and good weather are approaching, the liquid inside is pushed down the spout. The less liquid in the spout, the higher the pressure. When low pressure is approaching, the greater the preesure inside the glass and hence the liquid is forced up the spout. Part of the fun of these is that when extreme low pressure comes, such as a quickly built storm in summer, the liquid can spurt out the top of the spout. That is why that little dish on the base is t- to catch any spillage. An added feature of this barometer is the dial on top. That contains a German made thermometer and hygrometer. How cool is that! A complete weather station in one! The stand is made of cherry and stained a medium dark color. It stands about 17.5" high. The base is oval and is 7" across and 5" deep. The catch dish read more
