Wedgwood Houdin's Statue of Washington,Virginia Military Institute Centennial Plate 1839-1939 This listing is for a very elegant Wedgwood plate commemorating the 100th (centennial) birthday of Virginia Military Institute (VMI). The plate has a mulberry (dark reddish-purple) center design of "Houdin's Status of Washington," on an ivory body with an embossed floral and scroll rim. The plate measures 10-5/8 inches wide across the rim. The plate is in fair condition. There is heavy overall crazing, and in the upper right (imagine 1:00 on the face of a clock) is a thickened craze line that I would call a crack--it's visible on the front and the underside. There are no other chips or cracks, nor any signs of utensil marks or wear. There is some ink that has gotten into the craze lines on the bottom (where the goofy store marked the price). The plate has a clear mulberry mark on the bottom for "Houdin's Statue of Washington, / Virginia Military Institute. / 1839 1939. / Wedgwood of Etruria & Barlaston Made in England / Sole Importers Jones, McDuffee & Stratton Boston / Centennial Edition." There are also assorted impressed marks which I can't make out.
