When we went to see her, we went to see them as well. I always remembered passing by the old barn on the way to their house. This is Uncle Bill's old barn on a late afternoon in the middle of May. It would have been a Saturday when we went to see them. I think my Uncle Bill was my favorite of all my Father's five brothers. He was tall, about 6' 6". My Dad was tall, too, at 6" 2", but next to Uncle Bill he seemed short, somehow. He and my Aunt had what my Mom called knick knacks everyw Little statues and bowls of flowers sitting on neat little crocheted doilies adorned every flat surface in their house. I once asked my Mother why we didn't have things like that, and she said, "Uncle Bill and Aunt Nettie don't have any kids, and we have four!" The thing I remember most about my Uncle Bill was that he only had one thumb. I remember how well he got along using only the four fingers of his hand using his index finger as a thumb. When my Dad and his brothers were young, they went hunting a lot. They were a family of fourteen growing up during the depression, and sometimes the only meat on the table was provided by those six boys and their shotguns. On one such trip, Uncle Bill decided to shinny up a tall tree to get a better shot at some game. Unfortunately in his hurry to get the shot, he forgot to uncock his gun. And in his efforts to climb quickly up the tree he grabbed his gun by the barrel and drug it along after him. When the trigger got jambed on a branch, he jerked it free, and lost his thumb in the process. My Dad remembers helping bandage up his brother's hand. They took him home, then the five brothers went back out into the woods and finished catching supper. Life really was hard in those days. My Purpos This is a painting of the Southern Appalachian Mountain area w I live and work. I use the flowers and scenery found as subjects for my work Occasionally someone will send me pictures of other places, or I might go t myself. I also use those. I am most fortunate to have been able to return to this area after years away. It's a funny thing about these mountains, though. They call you back home. The mountains and valleys speak to my soul, as they have always done to those fortunate enough to hear their voices. They spoke to those who came before to settle these hills, and to those who were already , the Native Americans. These were my ancestors. When I listen to the mountains, I hear the voices of my fathers and mothers whispering in the winds. I share our voices and hearts in these vignettes of this place . My Bio: I was born in Eastern Tennessee, the youngest of the four kids of a school teacher and an industrial engineer. I started painting in oils when I was twelve years old. Although I have completed commissions in watercolors and acrylics over the years, oils have always been my passion. I love the way they blend together, the glow they give to the subject matter. I love being able to lay down a brush stroke and have the stroke's impression add to the composition. I even love the odor of oil paint! I went to East Tennessee State University and majored in Fine Arts, but wound up leaving school to major in mothering my five wonderful children. I didn't stop painting, though.
