DISCLOSURE: The chess board hales from the 1970's. It was purchased way back then, but never taken out of the box. It is still in the original shrink wrap. It was made in West Germany, by the Steeb Company, marketed as Steeb Interactive Hobby. This chess board is a pre-cut marquetry kit that you build yourself. Everything you need is in this kit for a chess board that you build yourself. The finished board measures 440 mm by 440 mm. That translates out to 17.323 inches in each direction.I believe the wood is walnut and beech. That makes a beautiful contrasting chess board. This West German maker is known for very high quality products.I have built at least 40 chess boards from scratch, not kits. This kit is a good way to start out and get the feel of the process. I can tell you from much experience that chess boards are a lot more work than they first appear. The first photo shows a chess piece. That is just an image on the plastic shrink wrap; it's not an image on the chess board.
