This is an ober size soft cover done on the best quality paper as a coffee table type book of 200 pages with 214 illustrations and maps. The authr, Mary Louise Sergent, is without doubt the greatest historian of the Academy ever and it shows in this tome. Her love of the Academy is legendary, and it is plain she put all her efforts possible into this volume. The book covers the class that entered in 1857 nd was due to graduate in 1862, withWest Point then being a five year institution; this class would be the only one to graduate a year early. From its 52 members would come 41 Union officers, 11 Confederates, 15 generals, 5 Medal of Honor winners and it would suffer a 65% casualty rate. Evey member of the class is shown in his cadet photo and some later in service along with a detailed biography of their lives including men like Custer. John Pelman, Michie, Porter, etc. Sergent has a way of making all these men come to life as if she were tlking directly to you, and her respect and love of this class clearly shows. She also details thei nstructors these cadets had such as Fitzhgh Lee. Hardee, Reynolds and so many more. One higlight is the views of the cadets of their teachers including a drawing of one as a devil-humor is not forgoten in this book.
