The West Shore, Leopold Samuel, Complete 12 month bound volume for 1871 Samuel, Leopold. (Publisher). The West Shore, An Illustrated Western Magazine. Thirteenth Year, 1887. January-December bound as One. Portland: L. Samuel, 1887. Tall octavo, gilt-stamped black cloth with leather spine, 922 pages + 144 illustrations + 6 pages adverts. Founded by Leopold Samuel, a German immigrant who settled in Portland, Oregon in 1871, West Shore had a very successful 16 year life from 1875-1891. A literary and historic journal, West Shore promoted life in the Northwest not only through the pens of well-known authors but also through the magnificent illustrations which accompanied each issue: showing scenes of landscape, architecture and commerce, the finely executed wood engravings and lithographs promoted Oregon, California, Washington, Idaho, British Columbia and Alaska. Up for auction is this exceedingly scarce bound copy of the complete 12 months of The West Shore issued for 1887. Uncommon as individual issues, the bound volumes are only rarely seen and quite desirable; offered at a low starting price, this auction presents an uncommon opportunity for the Collector of Northwest Americana. The Illustration formats are as follows: Single page duo-toned lithographs: 7 Folding double-page duo-toned lithographs: 3 (with 2 being only partial) Double-sided duo-toned lithographs: 59 (so 118 total illustrations) Double-sided wood engravings: 4 Single page wood engravings: 7 Folding double-page wood engraving: 1 Condition notes: Good+. This tall octavo, measuring 10 inches by 6&3/4 inches, is bound in a black dimpled cloth which has been gilt-stamped with the title; the spine, which is leather, is only partially present and partially detached. The prior owner’s name plate (the esteemed historian Robert Hitchman) is neatly affixed to the front paste down and the prior owner wrote in pencil upon the front free end page. The hinges are somewhat cracked, the title page for February is loose as is page 914, and the 2 folding lithos for January as noted are only partially present; nonetheless, the text is complete and in very good condition and 142 of 144 illustrations are complete and in very good condition. Uncommon, scarce in the bound format and exceedingly desirable, this complete 12 issue bound volume for the 1887 West Shore awaits the astute collector.
