We hand make museum quality harpoons. These are real harpoons , new, but made to look old. Our harpoons are typical representations of the "irons" found in the Catalogue of The Whaling Museum, Old Dartmouth Historical Society in New Bedford, MA., of which we are members. The iron is a Temple Toggle type. ( The earliest toggle irons were made with the toggle head positioned inside a shank clevis. The head rotated on a pivot pin that was fastened in the clevis and passed through the toggle head. Tradition attributes the invention of this harpoon to Lewis Temple, a New Bedford blacksmith, in 1848...It was quickly proven, widely accepted, and became standard in the industry). Taken from Harpoons And Other Whalecraft by Thomas G. Lytle. The "iron" ( whalers parlance for the metal part of the harpoon), is chemically aged to a fire black patina as it would look in the "period" condition on the whaleboat. Genuine Stockholm tarred hemp marline is used to serve the split socket and is secured with a whalers turkshead knot. The initials of the maker (S&P) is hand stamped in the irons head, as was the custom. It measures 38 inches from the tip to the end of the split socket. The fit is perfect! The whale line is genuine hemp, not manila. 12 feet of tarred marline is enclosed for stopping the whale line to a pole. Directions on how to make the pole is enclosed also. Most international shipping is restricted due to the size of the parcel on a harpoon with a pole. So, we offer this as an economical way to aquire your harpoon. This whalecraft makes an excellent display of the American Whaling era. It is suitable for home, office, museum, and anyw a nautical theme is desired. The pictures are of this harpoon. Lots of labor with attention to detail and genuine materials ensure a great product. These are the best found anyw! Comments and questions appreciated, Thanks, Harpoonguy
