S & P Harpoons We hand make museum quality harpoons. These are real harpoons , hand made new, and aged to look old. Our harpoons are typical representations of the "irons" found in the Catalogue of The Whaling Museum, Old Dartmouth Historical Society in New Bedford, MA. This harpoon is a Toggle iron. (".. The standard hand-darted harpoon of the American whale fishery during the last half of the nineteenth century was the improved toggle iron...") Taken from the best book on harpoons, 'Harpoons And Other Whalecraft' by Thomas G. Lytle. The earliest were hand made and took time and labor. Later they were cast & mass produced. This one is hand made! The iron measures 36 1/2 inches long from the tip to the end of the split socket. It is hand formed and aged to a fire black patina thru controlled corrosion. The socket is served with genuine Stockholm tarred marline and secured with a whalers turkshead knot to prevent chafe of the whale line when fastened to the whale. A wood peg is also included to prevent the iron from "toggling over" untill it was fastened to the whale. The pole is dense Alaska spruce, over 100 years old. It is hand hewn and naturally distressed. The whale line is genuine hemp, not cheap manila. Overall the harpoon is 7 foot 5 inches long when mounted. This whalecraft makes an excellent display of the whaling era. It is suitable for home, office, museum, and anywhere a nautical theme is desired. The pictures are of this harpoon. They are the best found anywhere! Lots of labor and genuine materials ensure a great product. Some of our harpoons are used in the subsistence whale fishery. Others are used on large denizens such as halibut and shark! We recently auctioned one for $1,500.00. Comments and questions appreciated! Thank you, Harpoonguy. Hand Made in the U.S.A. Add $10.00 for rustic display hangers. Note: For Australia we have to cut the pole and pin it due to shipping restrictions. Please add $20.00 for this. Cheers
