This rare unusual whaling log / journal was kept by a man named George Smith who started the journal aboard the ship China in the Pacific Ocean in August of 1847. What makes this journal unusual is that George Smith jumped from whaling ship to whaling ship staying in the Pacific ocean, most of the time off the Gallapagos Islands for at almost four years while he kept this journal. There does not appear to be a connection between any of the ships as they were not owned by the same people nor were they from the same ports. The Journal starts aboard the Ship China in August of 1847. Smith changes ships in August of 1848 when he sails with Captain Gardner aboard the Ship Nantucket. Smith stays aboard the Ship Nantucket for one year and then jumps to the Ship Lafayette from New Bedford. In July of 1850 he jumps to the Ship Callao were he stays until the journal ends in April of 1851. This journal contains aprox. 220 hand written pages with dozens of whale stamps and hand written illustrations including land masses and a stove boat (see picture #5). At the beginning of the journal is a list of more than 50 ships, these must have been ships that Smith had seen or had contact with during his whaling voyages in the Pacific. Smith also kept tract of how much whale oil was taken by the ships, and kept tract of expenses. It appears he also kept tract of the pay or shares of some of the men. The journal is completely original and has marbled cardboard covers with a leather spine. Some of the marbled paper has worn off the back cover and the corners are rounded, however, the hand written journal itself is in a FINE state of preservation! As with all of my rare items I am starting this auction at $9.99 with NO RESERVE!
This journal was kept by George Smith who joined the in-process whaling voyage abaord the whaling ship China in August of 1847 at Paita, a Pacific Island east of Australia. I failed to mention that the journal ended aboard the Bark Superior. George Smith spent from Otober 1850 to May 1851 aboard the Bark Superior.
