Offered for your consideration is one of the rarest vintage hamburger china mugs. This is a 1920’s era – side logo – first pattern – china restaurant mug – hamburger mug measuring 3 ½” tall by 4 ½” wide (from side of the handle across to the opposite side of the top rim) from the White Castle Hamburger Systems – Hamburger Stands. If you collect White Castle items, hamburger mug, or restaurant ware, you truly might want to consider this rarity for your collection.
White Castle was started in 1921 by Billy Ingram and Walter Anderson to open their first location in Wichita, Kansas. Their clean, speedy, and economical hamburger and food became very popular. The taste that White Castle used was also very unique and tasteful for the time, which included using fresh ground beef and onions to sautéed small square patties served on small bun. Eventually, the company started expanding its hamburger stands into other areas of the Midwest. Some of these locations included New York City - Queens, The Bronx, and Long Island New York. In New Jersey, they included the cities of Newark, Liden, Maplewood, Elizabeth, Clifton, North Bergen, Orange, Verona, and Lynbrook. In Illinois, the cities of Chicago, Roseland, Kedzie, and Princeton. Of the Chicago District Office, the cities in Indiana of Whiting, Hammond, and Berwyn. In Michigan, the cities of Detroit Ferndale, and Clifford Michigan. In Missouri: St. Louis. In Kentucky: St. Matthews, Covington, and Louisville, In Minnesota: Minneapolis and St. Paul. Ohio included Cincinnati, Hyde Park, Norwood, and Reading. And in Indianapolis, Indiana, with Columbus, Ohio, eventually becoming where the General Offices were located at 1402 West Broad Street. Today, White Castle is the oldest and very popular hamburger restaurants in the United States. The mug shows a multi-colored highly detailed image of an Art- Deco hamburger stand with the famous “WHITE CASTLE HAMBURGERS” in black above and below the logo. Again, I believe this was their first pattern of china used in the hamburger stands. Even though White Castles were small, they still used hotel – restaurant type china to serve their customers who decided to dine at the small counter / booths. This mug would have been used to serve hot fresh coffee, hot tea, or hot chocolate from. It would have been used in connection with the White Castle hotel silver soldered – silver plate and glassware. It is the heavyweight type Steamship, Lunch Counter / Lunch Room, and Railroad China. The mug was made by the Warwick China Co. that was located in Wheeling, West Virginia. The mug has the 1920’s era backstamp in green that features the Knight’s helmet and “WARWICK” in a banner. It has no usage chips, but does have glaze wear to the rims from usage. It has no usage cracks, but there is a slight mold separation where the handle attaches to the body on the backside. There is also an area on the bottom rim that was done at the time of manufacturing that shows were a portion of the rim was slightly shaven off (does not distract, but wanted to mention it). It has overall age faint age spots and an area of the glaze near the handle where it is just slightly rough. I can only remember seen maybe two of these in the past several years of collection, which those two were not in as good of shape as this one is. A great addition to your Home Decorating / Home Furnishing, Restaurant China / Hamburger Mug, Drive-In, or Restaurant Cup collection. The digital images do not show the original item that well. The actual item looks much better than what the digital images shows it as. Buyer to prepay item along with $9.99, which includes shipping, packing, and handling in the United States.
