Dorrel Norman Elvert "Whitey" Herzog ( pronounced /ËˆhÉœrzÉ’ɡ/ ; born November 9, 1931 in New Athens, Illinois ) is a former Major League Baseball manager . Born in New Athens, Illinois , he made his debut as a player in 1956 with the Washington Senators. After his playing career ended in 1963, Herzog went on to perform a variety of roles in Major League Baseball, including scout , manager , general manager and farm system director. Most noted for his success as a manager, he led the Kansas City Royals to three consecutive playoff appearances from 1976 to 1978. Hired by Gussie Busch in 1980 to helm the St. Louis Cardinals , the Cardinals won the 1982 World Series and made two other World Series appearances in 1985 and 1987 under Herzog's direction. He was inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame on July 25, 2010. ... In most cases, using Jack Smalling's baseball address lists and other assorted address lists, I wrote to both active and retired baseball players, sending them letters, requests for signatures, and self-addressed-stamped envelopes. This is how I obtained thousands of autographs, most during the 1970s-1980s. I also obtained many autographs in person at area parks and hotels.In the 1980's and 1990's, I travelled the country doing shows (20 National Conventions) and would buy quantities of sports autographs through player signings (HOFers Mantle, Dimaggio, Mays, Aaron, Williams etc) at the National Pastime Shows in Harvey,Illinois) Others through Dick Gordon, Bob Lee, Bob Allen, Stan the Man Inc., the Chicagoland Sports Collectors Club and other early promoters. I watched the change in Muhammad Ali signatures over the years as Iâ€™d write to him in Berrien Springs ,Michigan . Many of yesterdays stars were very reliable signers, but slow to answer their mail requests. I have also been fortunate to purchase some great collections over the years. I have every reason to believe that all of the autographs I'm auctioning are absolutely authentic. I stand by every item I sell. Upon purchasing an item from me through eBay, you may return that item, in the condition in which I shipped it to you, within three weeks of receipt of that item if you are not satisfied with the item.
