Whittier & Spear 8-1/4" Smooth Plane VERY RARE This coffin smoother has a faint and mostly legible imprint of Whittier and Spear, a Chelsea, MA palnemaker workingere from 1874-78. It also has a Thistle Brand (Auburn Tool Co) cutter. The plane is in good++ condition, and would be rated higher except that the iron and cap iron have some pitting (but not on the front, or cutting side of the iron). A presevative has been applied to the irons. The body is solid, with 2 very small and tight checks on the toe. The abutments and throat are is great shape, as is the wedge.
