This is an outstanding example of a Victorian period, quadruple plate, tilting ice water pitcher on stand. It was made by the Wilcox Silver Plate Co., of Meriden, Conn. and bears the patent date of October 29th, 1878. It retains its original drip plate and goblet, these are often missing. The drip plate is decorated with a scene of a cherub chasing a butterfly against a lush floral background. This type of scenic decoration is unusual on a drip plate, but given the elaborate decoration throughout this pitcher and stand, Wilcox decided to go all out when they produced this. The stand has a repousse band around its base composed of scrolls and roses, the rose motif continues on the open work panels that decorate the uprights and the handle has a beaded crown. The pitcher also has repousse decoration as well as chased, large scale florals on the body with an elaborate handle and spout. The goblet has matching decoration. This ice water pitcher on stand has survived in very good condition, t are three flaws to point out: a horizontal dent on one side with the only spot of plate wear, dead center below the dent, staining to the enamel interior of the pitcher and a repair to the beading of the handle. The dent is not visible when the pitcher is in the stand. None of this matters, this piece is majestic in person and no one will notice.
