Revealed are the pioneer’s theories and attitudes about “Injun” history and culture, dealings between traders and tribes, Custer’s description of “Wild Bill,” Custer’s debacle, and Sherman’s terrible march. Documents discuss witch doctors, outraged, women, the Indian Bureau and the great Indian Chiefs, Sitting Bull, Lone Wolf and Satanta. The Messiah Craze, the Ghost Dance and the Big Chief’s talk with the “Great White Father” in Washington are included. The struggle and ultimate demise of the Apaches, Kiowas, Sioux, Cheyennes, Arapahoes and Pawnees is described in vivid detail. The first part of Wild Life on the Plains and Horrors of Indian Warfare was written by a United States Cavalryman and depicts life after the Civil War.
