For sale is a magnificent pair of Egyptian Revival twin handled pottery vases made by the Bohemian manufacturers, Wilhelm Schiller & Sons, in, I would estimate, the late nineteenth century. The vases bear identical decoration in the form of pharaoh's faces to both back and front, around and below which are hieroglyphic style decoration, heightened with gilding. The handles take the form of two headed serpents. The vases are large, being 27.5 cms tall. The maker's mark on the base of the red vase is shown in my sixth photo. The same mark appears on the base of the black vase but lack of photographic space prevented me from showing it. For such intricateley shaped and decorated vases, the condition of the vases is really very good indeed. The only possible flaw on the red vase is probably a manufacturing one and comes in the form of a small mark on one of the cheeks of one of the pharaoh's faces (see my fifth photo). I say that it is a probable manufacturing flaw because the mark is under the glaze which is smooth to the touch. The black vase has a small chip on the the base (see my eleventh photo) which shows as a tiny white mark on the base edge when the vase is standing (see my last photo).
