Will Hutchins was born in Colchester, Connecticut in 1878. After graduation from Yale University, he went to Paris and studied painting with Laurens at the Academy Julian. From Paris, he traveled to Italy where he studied early Italian art and painted the Italian countryside. Upon his return from Europe, he shared a studio in Deerfield, Massachusetts with Augustus Vincent Tack, the famous portrait painter. In 1925, he joined the faculty of American University where he established the art department and developed a lasting friendship with Duncan Phillips, founder of the Phillips Collection in Washington, D.C.
Hutchins favorite subjects were the Hudson River, Italy, Deerfield, Massachusetts, and the environs of Blue Hill Maine, where he kept a summer home.
A retrospective of his works was held at the Washington County Museum of Fine Arts in 1962. The three works by Hutchins in this catalog are the first of his paintings ever to be offered at auction.
