The set includes the tea pot, the creamer, and the lidded sugar. The impressive weight is approximatly 87.05 troy ounces. The Forbes family had a long and distinguished career as master silversmiths. The Forbes brothers William Garret (1751-1840) and Abraham Gerritze 1764-1833) were the founders of a prominent New York City silversmithing family.William Forbes (1791-1888) was the grandson of William Garret Forbes and the son of Colin Van Gelder Forbes. He was active in New York City from 1826 to 1864, first working with his father (1826-1833) in the firm of Colin V. G. Forbes and Son and then continuing alone. The Forbes' family provided silver to Marquand & Co. and to its successors Ball, Tompkins & Black (active 1839-51) and Ball, Black & Co. (active 1852-74). In addition William also worked with the New York City silver manufacturer/retailer J&I Cox (1817-1853). The teapot is of bulbous form on a stepped circular foot, the body with exquisite hand chased and engraved foliate scroll work enclosing a vacant central cartouche. Decorated with applied die-rolled foliate borders. The applied handles with acanthus leaf scrolls still have their ivory insulators. Marked: "W. FORBES" in a rectangle above the center point flanked by two eagles, each in a circle above "J.& I. COX" The pieces are in excellent estate condition.
