American (1823-1894)
oil on canvas, 20 x 16, signed lower left and dated 1857.
Notes: In 1858 The Ladies Respository published an original engraving by James Smillie titled ''Nutting'', after William Hart and dated 1856. According to the magazine's editor, writing in the same issue, ''Nutting', is one of those exquisite, lifelike delineations which have placed Mr. Smillie among the first of living artist. . . The original painting by Mr. Hart, from which this was copied, has been highly eulogized. For the use of it we are indebted to its proprietor, Mr. Church, himself an artist well known to the American public.'' This newly rediscovered closely related painting, ''Nutting 1857'' is the second and more refined version of the subject. Neither painting is recorded in the exhibition records of the period. The original 1856 engraving accompanies the lot.
