Greetings. You are bidding on the OFFICIAL British medal commemorating the CORONATION of WILLIAM and MARY of Great Britain in 1689. This is the SILVER official medal.

Dimensions/Specifics :

-Issue Date : 1689

-Purpose of issue : Official Coronation Medal for King William and Queen Mary.

-Material : Silver (AG) medal.

-Weight : 0.6 oz (apx.)

-Shape/Size : Round. 35 mm diameter.

-Design :

Obverse : Cojoined draped busts of William and Mary, facing right. Legend : GVLIELMUS. ET. MARIA. ET. REGINA (William and Mary, King and Queen).

Reverse : Jove hurling thunder at Phaeton, falling from his chariot, the earth in flames. Legend : NE TOTVS ABSVMATVR (That this may not all be consumed.). Exergue : Inavgvrat. ii. ap. 1689 (Crowned, 11 April, 1689). NOTE: The reverse image caused considerable consternation in the Jacobite ranks ans the representation of Phaeton was taken to be James II, who had fled the country four months earlier.

Condition :

-This medal is in "extremely fine" condition (on a scale where extremely fine is equivalent to mint state for a coin). Very nice appearance with dark steely grey color. Minimal visible wear.

-This medal was owned, and displayed, by an adult collector in a smoke-free home.
