WILLIAM SPRATLING âeoeButtons and Bowsâe Silver Ashtray. Conquistador Second Design Period: 1949 âe" 1951. WILLIAM SPRATLING, is known as the most influential designer in Mexico . Is also known as the one who started the period known as The Mexican Silver Renaissance. Many of the designers who worked with him created their own workshops. This piece appears in the book: Mexican Silver, 20 th Century Handwrought Jewelry & Metalwork by Penny Chittim Morrill and Carole A. Berk, pg 49. This is a silver ashtray on a pedestal. Spratling refered to this as a "Discos" pattern, was Conquistador called it "Buttons and Bows." Other pieces were crafted using this design, as bowls and trays. This piece was crafted entirely in silver, it has a symmetric design with three buttons on each side over âeoeSâe forms joined together. The pedestal does not has any ornamentation. It belongs to the Conquistador Second Design Period which goes from 1949 to 1951. It measures: 3 1/8 X 2 3/8 in. and 1 1/8 of height. It is fully marked as follows: Conquistador shield, eagle with the number 13, STERLING , MEXICO . It weights: 40.8 gr.
