MIGUEL MELENDEZ Mexican Malachite and Silver Bracelet. Fully Marked, ca. 1960âe(tm)s, Pre-Columbian Inspiration. MIGUEL MELENDEZ began his career as an apprentice at Taller de las Delicias with WILLIAM SPRATLING. He joined Los Castillo at its formation in 1940, w he spent several years. He also worked at Margot de Taxco workshop. This bracelet was made by Miguel Melendez in the 1960âe(tm)s. This wonderful bracelet is an authentic piece of art by itself. The designs were surely inspired by Pre-Conquest clay stamps or architectural motifs. It has a rich cultural background like that of the Mexican traditions. It is known that the silver of Taxco is internationally recognized for its purity and extraordinary artistic qualities. In all the workshops, silversmith was almost entirely done by hand. This bracelet is made of seven almost identical panels. They have the same shape, but each panel has a different figure in silver, surely inspired in Pre-Columbian clay stamps. We identify a rabbit, an eagle, a grasshopper and an ear of corn. This figures are disposed on the center of each panel, and surrounding them are pieces of malachite. Each one measures: 1 1⁄4 X 3/4 in. approx. This is a really fine work. The clasp is in perfect working condition and it also has a security chain attached to it. An incredible amount of handwork was
