William Tecumseh Sherman (1820-1891), Union Civil War General. Famous for his March to the Sea. The check signed by Sherman is a Washington, D.C., Riggs & Co check dated 1876-1880 signed W.T. Sherman. Rare!! This is a beautiful piece of history!!! T are what looks like cancellation tears on the check and I have pointed them out on close-up photos so you can see w they are. They each cover an approximate 1 inch square area and are located over the signature and between the "Washington, D.C." and the "Riggs & Company" area. I am sure that someone out t will make a comment on my estimation and I will post the answer on the purpose for the tears. The tears are stable and take little if anything from the enjoyment of this great piece of history. This would be a wonderful mounting piece. Please feel free to ask any questions or for more photos.
