Born during German's occupation of his country, he spent the first two years of his life in a hospital. Throughout his early years he suffered from small-pox, and rheumatic fever.Self- taught he started painting around this time. In 1950 at the age of eleven he moved with his family to America and spent his youth in North Dakota. His years in the Dakotas helped define some of his works today. Later his family moved to Long Island New York. Though a bright student, he had little interest in school. To help his family, he at age sixteen, went to work in a machinist factory.
