Willie Nelson 4 th of July Picnic number 3 in 1975 was held in Liberty Hill Texas , a small rural ranch area northwest of Austin . Boy has that place changed! I was fortunate to have worked all of the picnics during the 70âe(tm)s and early 80âe(tm)s and this was my favorite. The site was beautiful with lots of natural shade, backstage at least, and even a few areas near by for the adventurous to shed their clothes and do a little skinny dipping. This concert was a one day affair and featured such artists as Kris Kristofferson, Rita Coolidge, Doug Sahm, The Pointer Sisters, Billy Swan Johnny Bush, Charlie Daniels and many others. The poster for this picnic is also my favorite. Drawn by poster guru, Jim Franklin, it is colorful and unique. This is a hard poster to get a hold of; it is very seldom put up for sale, except for those cheap reproductions. This poster is from my personal collection and was at one time displayed on the wall of my Austin apartment. Unfortunately at the time during the 70âe(tm)s I had no idea how to take care of such beautiful artwork and put holes through each of the corners with thumbtacks. T is also a thumbtack hole in the black border on the bottom. None of these holes are in the artwork and would not show if the poster was framed.
