This auction is for a Wimshurst machine with 28 cm discs. It is of a newer make, with plastic Leiden jars and a plastic rotating disk, rather than glass. But it does work nicely, better in fact than older versions I have used. The picture is of an actual spark we drew from the machine. THIS MACHINE HAS REPLACED THE COPPER BRUSHES WITH FOUR METAL PROTRUSIONS. THE RESULT IS ELECTRIC FOR ALL THE RIGHT REASONS. I AM HAVING FUN WITH THIS MACHINE AS IT IS MORE READY TO POP AND THE SPARKS SEEM BIGGER. I ALMOST GOT ELECTROCUTED THE LAST TIME I TESTED ONE. JUMPED STRAIGHT OUT OF MY CHAIR BECAUSE I DID NOT EXPECT THE JOLT AND IT POWERED UP MORE EFFORTLESSLY THAN MY LAST MODEL WITH THE SHORT COPPER BRUSHES. I UPLOADED A NEW PICTURE THAT SHOWS THE SHARP PROJECTIONS LATER IN THE WEEK. THIS WAS A REALLY GOOD IMPROVEMENT ON THE DESIGN OF THIS MACHINE.This Wimshurst machine can be used in electrostatic experiments the same ways older machines are used; for example, you can charge the Leiden jars, and then rotate the metal rods with the balls at the end so they come into contact with some item you wish to charge, or w you want a rapid discharge. But you cannot remove the Leiden jars.The machine is new. We took it out of the box to make sure it worked and then repacked. You will receive it in the original box. Included is a small booklet entitled "The Wimshurst Machine - How to Make and Use It." This is a fully illustrated booklet containing chapters such as "Static Electricity," "Condensers," "The Leyden Jar," and "The Parts of a Wimshurst Machine and Their Use." T is also a chapter illustrating some experiments and explains the results you should be able to observe. This booklet will illustrate how your Wimshurst Machine works as well as instructions on how to build one from scratch. The booklet is from the 1920's but keep in mind that the Wimshurst Machine was a favorite hobby of Ben Franklin and he would have quite enjoyed having this little booklet, but then again genius that he was, he could have written it himself. The copy you will receive is not the original out of print booklet, but includes everything the original book contains. I put it in a spiral book format so that the reader can have it lying flat while reading and using the Wimshurst at the same time. I tried to duplicate the book in the same format as I have it, but it would not lay flat and did not seem practical. I understand t is a wider range of experiments that go beyond this book, but always keep in mind as you progress from beginner status to novice, this does involve electricity, an element not compatible with some functions of the human body, and could result in an unwanted NDE or quite simply an unpleasant and painful situation. Includedwith this auction is A. D. Moore's "Electrostatics." This includes the Dirod Manual. The chapters include "High Voltage," "Frictional Electricity," "Let's Talk About Charges," "The Dirods," "Improving the Generator," "Electric Fields," "Corona," "Fun with Capacitors," "Atmospheric Electrostatics," and the thorough, "This and That." This is a brand new book. Professor Moore would cover 150,000 "station wagon miles" lecturing to high school science clubs and college students all over the United States, Canada and Europe in which he also demonstrated his electrostatic generators. In 1970 he was instrumental in forming the Electrostatics Society of America (ESA) and served as its first president. A. D. Moore's Electrostatics has been one of the most sought-after books in the field since it first appeared in 1968. It is written at the level a middle school student can understand, but the scientific insights and experimental techniques described make it valuable to graduate students of electrostatic phenomena. some of which still has never been explained.
