A large Art Nouveau/Jugendstil wine bucket or vase, probably either French or German in origin. I believe the piece is pewter, but it is possible that it could be German Silver. If the latter is true, then the piece would have originally ben silver plated. The detail work is exceptionally fine. Two favorite continental Art Nouveau motifs, the maiden and the iris are both exceptionally well represented in the overall design. T is evidence that originally the piece had either a glass or possibly metal insert to insulate the exterior from damage by moisture. I have seen simlar pieces with insulators before. Overall, the raised design is very strong, with little evidence of having degraded over time. The surface actually polishes quite well. Which leads me to believe that the piece never was silverplated. I have been unable to locate a maker's mark on the piece. The wine bucket/vase measures Nine [ 9.00 ] inches in height. Or, just under 23.00 Cms. From handle end to handle end it measures Nine & One-Half [ 9.50 ] inches. Or, 24 Cms. The mouth is Five & One-Half [ 5.50 ] inches in diameter. Some pitting along the edge of the bottom rim.
