Item for auction is a rarely offered 0.04g fragment of the Winona meteorite that was discovered at Elden Pueblo, Coconino County, Arizona in the United States in September 1928. The site is an established prehistoric Native American village thought to have been built and utilized by the Sinagua culture around 1150-1275 A.D. The Winona meteorite was discovered in a stone cist in the floor of one of more than 60 rooms. The manner in which it was wrapped and buried nearly duplicated the same method of burial as a revered young child, which suggests that the pueblo builders most likely considered the meteorite as a sacred object, possibly after witnessing its fall. However, the special significance the Indians bestowed on the Winona meteorite is itself still a mystery. Scientifically, the meteorite is very rare type known as a Primitive Achondrite and is the Type Specimen (namesake) for the Winonaite group (other type specimens are Acapulco [Acapulcoite], Brachina [Brachinite], Lodran [Lodranite], etc). Curiously, Winonaites have been found to have a composition consistent with that of silicate inclusions within IAB iron meteorites.
