THE GODDESS HECATE Hecate is the oldest known Triple Goddess in European history, and pre-dates the gods of Olympian Greece. She is more widely perceived now as the Crone aspect of the Goddess, whose compassion is boundless, and whose heart has room for all Her creatures. She is the Goddess who leads the souls of the dead to their resting place, her hand holding a torch to light their way, and guides them toward re-birth. I've crafted this elegant set to remember Her legend. The set was inspired by the compelling portrait of Hecate by the gifted artist Sandra Stanton of Goddessmyths. She has painted remarkable renditions of Goddesses from cultures throughout the world. Her portrait of Hecate is my own personal favorite of all her paintings. My sincere thanks to Ms. Stanton for allowing me to use her name. This is a variation on my Witches' Mirror line. Medieval and Renaissance witches were said to be able to scry (or read the past, present and future) in surfaces as tiny as a thumbnail. The standard method was to read into a black bowl filled with water or ink, or to gaze into a mirror of onyx or obsidian. The astrologer to Queen Elizabeth I, the famed Dr. John Dee, was said to scry into a mirror of polished black obsidian.
