This candle scissor/snuffer is embossed with a "W.H. & S" maker's mark, which apparently stands for William Hutton & Sons, an old English firm that made silverware (see close-up picture of the mark below at right). Following that is another symbol that I've been unable to identify so I drew a picture of it (see a photo of my drawing, also below). I'm guessing that this symbol denotes the type of metal the scissors are made of. From what I gather, since Hutton & Sons was an English firm, if they were made of Sterling Silver it would have a series of marks denoting such. Since it's apparently not silver, perhaps it's silverplated brass, pewter or copper??? (The bottom of the tray does have a pinkish-brownish tint to it.) In any event, you don't see too many antique Candle Snuffers on Ebay that have an English maker's mark, nor one so beautifully detailed or in such good condition, so this may be a very nice set. The three legs that the scissors stand on are in place and the scissors open and close tightly, as if they were made just yesterday. The tray seems to be of the same metal as the scissors but does not have any markings that I can see. The scissors are 6.5" long and the tray 10". Please do not hesitate to ask questions. If you'd like more pictures, I'd be more than happy to e-mail them to you. I'm auctioning a number of items that belonged to my various aunts and uncles who were born between 1902-1915 (received from my last surviving Aunt) - if you have a minute, please take a look at my other auctions. Thank you!
