Made By William Maurice of Sheffield, it is often mistakenly referred to as a Miners Lamp, although it was actually made for the GPO, latterly British Telecom, and the like, for testing the safety of the air in the various tunnels and confined spaces used by the telecommunications network. Many examples have "PO" or "GPO" or the newer Telecom "T" logo stamped on them, or on the brass plate on top of the hood. This particular example has the marking "PO 1981" which suggests that it was commissioned by the Post Office in 1981.These lamps did of course serve a vital safety role every bit as important as their more glamorous cousins in the coal mines, and as such are a fascinating piece of British industrial history. This lamp is easily dismantled for cleaning, refuelling or just for interest. All parts are clean and in good order as you can see from the pictures. The glass is free from scratches, chips or cracks.A fully working lamp, this can be used for mood lighting inside or out, and would look great at an evening BBQ or patio party. It runs on ordinary paraffin or lamp oil, or you could fill it with insect-repelling oil and it would be a fun conversation-piece insect repellent too.The lamp can be used standing on a flat surface, or hanging from a suitable support read more
