WOMEN'S SUFFRAGE IN UTAH Bill Sign VOTE 1870 Newspaper is a complete, genuine historic old newspaper with the following title, date and description: DESERET EVENING NEWS, from Salt Lake City, Utah Territory, dated February 12, 1870 * Early Woman's suffrage bill in Utah * Voting rights On page 2 under "The Woman's Suffrage Bill" is an editorial referencing the bill signed by the acting governor granting women the right to vote in the Utah Territory. The editorial says, in part: * We congratulate his Excellency upon his action in this matter.... The spirit and genius of the age point directly to an early day when women everyw throughout this wide republic will enjoy the right of suffrage... Also included is the message from the Governor to the Speaker of the House which begins: "I have the honor to inform you that I have this day approved, signed and deposited in the Secretary's office, 'An Act, conferring upon women the elective franchise...'" He also mentions his doubts about the measure, but then concludes by stating: "...I have approved...the bill, hoping that future experience may approve the wisdom of our action, and that the same may be found to be in harmony with the spirit and genius of the age...", signed in type: S.
