RARE AND ELECTRIC ANTIQUE BALUCH TRIBAL TENT RUG, frontier border area between NE Persia and NW Afghanistan, last quarter of the 19th century, and in excellent condition for the collector. The exact size, including both original kilim end finishes, is: 3'-3" x 5'-5" (99 x 165 cm). A dazzling, "eye candy", antique Baluch tribal textile relic. The field consists of an allover lattice "tile pattern" viewed on the diagonal with a lovely array of natural dyes including a fiery copper red, a dark indigo blue ground color that seems almost black, an electric medium indigo blue used only for the inner guard border surround, and three shades of aubergine purple ranging from eggplant to mauve. The "gul" motifs enclosed within the honeycomb grid are ancient ones and are common ornaments to widely separated ethnic rug weaving Turkic peoples as is the Turkmen "syrga" element used for the border design. This is one of those "chameleon" antique Baluch weavings that dramatically changes color when taken into the natural light or displayed with halogen lighting on the wall. This nicely woven specimen is asymmetrically knotted open to the left on natural ivory wool warps and natural medium brown wool wefts. The rug has evenly low ( but NOT worn) allover pile condition and it retains most of its original multi-striped kilim end finishes. T have been scattered professional re-pilings and re-knotting of moth bite areas and restoration to some areas of the side cord over-castings. Subtly drawn and used as filler figures are two animal effigies: a stag and a camel (see close up photos).
