SPLENDID ANTIQUE BORJALOU (Bordjalou) KAZAK CARPET, Southern Caucasus Mountains, south of Tiflis (Tbilisi), 4th quarter of the 19th century, circa: 1880's, and in excellent overall condition for the collector. The exact size is: 4'-9" x 6'-7" (145 x 201 cm). Wonderful design, softest wool quality, richly saturated natural dyes, and very good condition characterize this lovely specimen of Caucasian village, cottage-produced, folk art. Originally, this weaving district was a settlement for Borchalu tribespeople deported by Shah Abbas from the Hamadan district in NW Persia in the 17th century. Earlier made specimens like this offering are more square in size. Toward the end of the 19th century into the beginning of the 20th century these types were more rectilinear in size and have blue wool wefts instead of red wefts like this one possesses. Most of the pile is medium in length with some lower pile areas and a few scattered re-knotting of worn spots (see photo # 11). Note that the side cords are all complete and original. At the top end, the original braided warp endings are all present (see photos # 5, 10, and 12). The bottom ending is complete showing minor repairs and is now sewn back securely to prevent any future loss of structure. The carpet has been professionally cleaned to museum standards and is now collection ready. A juicy and playful antique textile artifact for the discriminating collector of rare rugs.
