Wonderful Early 19th C Wooden Lantern with Great Old Glass

This wonderful early 1820's to 40's lantern is nicer than most we see listed. The maker took the time to shape the corners of the outside of the posts and decorated the upper and lower ends of the posts to make this a much more desirable form. The swing handle has a deep red turned cherry grip that's softly worn with use of many years. The edges of the top and bottom boards are carved with a thumb nail molding like seen on early panels. The smoke hole is shaped in a geometric pattern that obviously wasn't meant to be cover from the beginning. It has snipe hinges on the mortise and tenon-ed and wooden pegged door that contains its early bubbly glass. The whole lantern has great early glass with many waves and bubbles. The wrought iron turn that holds the door shut was moved for some reason many years ago and the smaller hole is above. It has the nice original tin candle socket nails to the bottom board. It has several splits in the top board that were repaired with tin strips on the underside of the top a long time ago. There are marks on the top of an even earlier repair that has been gone for a long time and replaced by the time. It has a little charring around the decorative exit hole in the top, but it is very minimal. This above average lantern would be a great addition to any advanced collection.
