Fresh from an old New England estate comes this amazing antique Black Forest hand carved box.Obviously a one off masterpiece by a master carver! (Unfortunately,I could not find a signature nor a hallmark.) Two (love?)birds flutter atop a flora and fauna encrusted landscape just brimming with delicately swirling vines,blossoms and leaves.The base of the box has 4 intricately carved tassled "feet",one on each corner.I am not an expert in which exact era,artisan,etc.,however,this is definitely something special.Nothing even close to it on Ebay.Definitely a tour de force in wood carving! The interior of the box is fully lined in red velvet and has a brass hinge/lock(sorry,no key).Just look at the exquisite details provided in the pictures,which tell the story.Pictures taken both with and without a flash. Darker shots are most accurate for color/appearance. S ize: 12"x9"x9" Condition: This piece is good all around condition.The only flaws are that,some of the leaf tips/wing tips were broken off during its life.The right wingtip of the left bird facing you has been re-attached,as there is a slight line.The left (1/4")wingtip on the right hand bird is broken off and absent.These can be restored by a professional if you wish,but it does display beautifully as found, nonetheless.The velvet interior is in fine shape,none missing,stained nor damaged. The wood itself appears quite healthy,and is not dried out,and has a nice luster,but perhaps the winning bidder knows what to do to enhance the finish further.Please email if you have more info on this piece;truly a museum quality carving!Thanks for looking ,! The bird with the repaired right wing has 1/4" wing tip absent from its left wing,and its center tail feather was chipped,while the other bird has a only a tiny piece of its right wing tip chipped off.Nonetheless,these imperfections are restorable,and are not so obvious. The picture showing the back of the box shows the aforementioned imperfections. A helpful Ebayer emailed to say he felt the base was representative of a tasseled pillow with blossoms and vines strewn about over it.Looking closely,one can see the intricate detailing of the actual weave of the cloth,along with creasing of the pillow was delicately and precisely carved into the wood-just stunning,really.
