Interesting wood canteen with unique carvings. The one side has a carved message,"Brothers I have traveled East" which I was informed could be a masonic message. T is also a crescent moon and star with 63 in the center (for 1863) which might be for Louisianna. On the reverse side t is a tag semi-attached to the wood, which is typed, "Canteen taken off a dead rebel in front of breast works at Gettysburg, July 2, 1863 , Major Mike Nolan". T is also another name carved into the wood but I can't make it out. I don't know the exact date of manufacure but could be a reunion canteen. The wood is cedar and has shrunk as the 2 metal rim bands are loose fitting as can be seen.It has 2 metal sling guides of different width sizes. The measurements are 7" in diameter by 2 3/4" in width. Winning bidder pays shipping calculated shipping cost to zip code.
