For your consideration we offer a unique sugar firkin or pantry bucket with what we believe to be original red and white paint. We have been watching firkins on Ebay for several months and this is the first red and white firkin bucket we have seen. The white handle is wood and is attached with red painted wood buttons. The handle moves freely and fits snugly while extended. T is one staple at the end of each of the four red finger bands; otherwise the firkin is held together with nails and tongue and groove boards or staves. T are 12 white painted staves and each are about 1/4 inch thick. The inside of the firkin bucket has a pleasant wood smell. The white cover has some wear (see the pictures), but it fits nicely. You can notice in the pictures that the red paint on the cover is slightly darker than the red on the bucket bands. The bottom seems to to have some type of yellow shellac or yellow stain. Notice in the picture that the recessed bottom seems to have a crack; however, this crack only extends half-way into the interior of the bucket. T is no 'give' when pressed--the bottom feels very secure. Finally, despite some small gaps in the tongue and groove staves at the bottom of the bucket, the firkin is solid, functional, and will display very well in a cottage or shabby chic collection of pantry primitives. Dimensions: 9 5/8 inches across the top; 10 1/8 inches across the bottom; 9 5/8 from bottom to the top of the cover; approximately 14 inches from the bottom to the top of the handle in the upright position. The handle is 1 1/8 inch wide; the cover band is 1 inch wide. T are three bands on the bucket; each band is approximately 1 1/4 inch wide. The firkin bucket weighs 3 pounds. We have described this item to the best of our ability. We are not experts in the field of firkin construction but we do know what we like and WE LIKE THIS BUCKET. We hope you will, too. We acquire our items at estate auctions, and this treasure was found at an auction in Hillsborough, North Carolina. Please email us with any questions, and we will be happy to provide more measurements and answers. No returns will be accepted. We will require insurance to mail this to you. Thanks for looking!
