It is hand engraved with circles with various designs inside on the face & on the smaller side with 4 circles & 2 large Xs. The mechanism that opens the spout to pour out the powder is 15/16" hand forged iron flat L shaped arm. The wood body is made of walnut but the top & bottom are oak! It is in good condition, the wood is nice without any cracks, splits or rot, the iron had light pitting & a dark brown patina. It was purchased in Ticonderoga New York in 1935 by Professor James Dunn who was a professor of American history at the New York University . He specialized in relics from the New York & led several agrological expeditions in 1935-1937 to the Lake Champlain area while doing research on General Arnold's fleet & the Battle of Valcour Island. Professor Dunn believed that this powder horn predated the Revolutionary era by quite a lot & may even date back to the 1600's! It comes with a letter from Dunn's grand daughter who was his research assistant & was t when this powder horn was bought.
