"There are only three books in the world that are worth opening in search of mottoes and quotations. These are, the Old Testament, Shakespeare, and the poetical works of Wordsworth." JAMES HOGG. Wordsworth as leader of "the lake school" and chief author of the epoch-making "Lyrical Ballads" of 1798 was a major cornerstone of the English Romantic literary movement. With Shelley, Keats, Coleridge, and Byron, he remains a major voice in 19th century poetry in English. Wordsworth collected editions are less common than other top romantic poets -- far less common on the market than Byron, for example. This set, printed during Wordsworth's lifetime (the first two volumes printed 1836, the last four printed 1837) is in attractive and complete edition of Six Volumes -- uniformly extra bound in quality half morocco leather preserving early, probability original publisher's cloth boards. On October 20th 1836 the poet wrote to the Rev. T.J. Judkins 'I am truly sensible of your kind offer to assist in illustrating my Poems, I regret that this was not thought of when we met in Town, and something might have been contrived for our Mutual satisfaction - It is now too late for the present edition.I have desired Mr. Mason to send you my volumes as they come out. If you think it worth while to compare the pieces entitled 'Evening Walk', 'Descriptive Sketches' and 'The Waggoner', you will find I have made made very consideraible alterations which I trust will be found to be improvements - at all events they ought to be so, for they cost me much labour'. This is the sole edition carrying the errata slips, for the amendments noticed were silently corrected in the subsequent issue of 1839. Complete authorized Moxon set is tight and little worn throughout. Hinges both inner and outer are sound, headcaps and tailcaps unbroken. All signatures are and pages are complete and secure. Gilt decoration and leather is bright. All headbands and tailbands are present. A little wear at edges of boards and corners (less than usually found). Some foxing at Wordsworth frontis portrail V. 1, but very little foxing overall. No library or ex-library stampings. No owner's signatures. Hand marbled endpapers are bright and clean. No underlining, no internal notations. No musty or smoky aroma. Only three Wordsworth 1836/37 issue sets in leather are found offered by internet listing dealers wordwide, priced at $995, $1,250, and $2,000 respectively. The higher cost examples include two supplementary volumes published years after this 6 volume set was issued. Complete and undamaged cloth bound sets are found between $337 and $555.
