We have a large number of vintage and antique clocks currently listed along with an equally impressive collection of music boxes, coffee grinders, and other very nice antique and vintage collectibles. This is an outstanding find of a rare, handcarved, working, 8 day cuckoo clock that was created in the Black Forest of "Triberg, Germany" about 60 years ago and signed on the movement by "Hubert Herr," one of the finest clockmakers in history! The clock is simply astonishing, shows little if any wear, and one of the finest I’ve ever seen. A ccording to Reinhard Herr (Hubert's Grandson), this clock is made of cured and aged Linden wood that is grown nearly exclusively at certain altitudes of the Black Forest. The case is large and adorned with four, large, hand carved wooden grape leaves on the front that are exceptional, deep, intricate, and wavy. Another is found on the wooden pendulum. There is a large, carved wooden bird near the bottom sitting on a fir branch and a beautifully-detailed, equally impressive, carved, large wooden bird at the very top of the clock looking as though he's ready to take flight. The detail is extraordinary and the case if finished in gorgeous deep mahogany; very nice! The wooden dial has a black backdrop and features raised white Roman numerals to mark the hours and fancy matching hands to point out the time. There is a hinged wooden access door on the right side of the case secured with a metal hasp. It opens easily to allow access for any adjustments that may be needed for the cuckoo mechanism. The clock has a fitted wood back and latches securely. The door easily removes to allow access to the weight driven mechanical movement inside the case signed by Hubert Herr. A weight driven movement simply means that the chains need to be pulled every 8 days or so to wind the clock and cuckoo activity. Hubert Herr left nothing to chance and made (still makes) his own movements. The tall wooden bellow tubes are in good shape and the tops look and sound equally good too! At the bottom of each hour, a colorful cuckoo bird opens the wooden door above the dial and stands in the doorway. He gives off a single cuckoo sound in tandem with a coiled chime before retreating back inside the case, closing the door behind him. The bird reappears at the top of each hour and correctly cuckoos/chimes the current number of hours before retreating to the safe confines of the inner clock; fascinating! The clock works quite well here, keeps good time, chimes correctly, and cuckoos as it should though being an old clock and we don't know the service history, some adjustments or service may be necessary once the clock arrives at its new home. We always recommend to our clock customers to service their antique or vintage clocks at least once every three years. Doing so will preserve a great clock like this one and keep it running strong. The clock comes complete as shown with two sets of attached metal chains, a carved wooden grape leaf pendulum, and two very heavy pinecone shaped metal weights. I've looked the clock over fairly well and can't find any damage or missing pieces save a few tiny nicks here and there. I’d say this clock is in very nice condition! It's an impressive old clock and equally so in size measuring about 14" or so high (not counting the weights or pendulum), about 6 1/2" at its deepest point, and about 10 1/2" or so across the top. This clock is in a league all its own. It’s one of the most stunning clocks you could ever find and a magnificent, nostalgic look back at the greatness of Black Forest workmanship. It will certainly turn a few heads when displayed in your home, office, or wherever it is that you care to showcase a very rare, beautifully carved cuckoo clock with a real history behind it. ; I know you'll love this clock!
