The book you are considering for bid is a very good, very old (1828) leather-bound copy of volume one of the fifteen volume set - THE WHOLE WORKS OF THE RIGHT REV. JEREMY TAYLOR - Lord Bishop of Down, Connor, and Dromord with A LIFE OF THE AUTHOR and A Critical Examination of his writings by Right Rev. Reginald Heber. This volume also contains Taylor's funeral sermon preached by Bishop Rust, samples of correspondence with a Mr. Henry Jeanes on the topic of original sin, and a series of his writings under the heading "Christian Consolations". "Jeremy Taylor (1613-1667) was a clergyman in the Church of England who received fame as an author for his poetic style and was often presented as a model of prose writing. He was under the patronage of William Laud, Archbishop of Canterbury. After Laud was tried for treason during the English Civil War and executed, Taylor was imprisoned several times but eventually released to live a quite life in Ireland. At the Restoration he was made Bishop of Down and Cannor in Ireland and became Chancellor of the University of Dublin." This book was published 1828 in London for a list of several names, 5.5"x8.5", 683 total pages. There is a nice frontispiece picture of Jeremy Taylor at his study desk. Like the other leather books in my current listing, this book is also in nice condition. Binding is tight; read more
