A 1907 Tellurium with an early Weber Costello terrestrial Globe This fascinating piece is a functional scientific instrument of the past to demonstrate the rotation of the earth around the sun and the moon orbiting Earth. The geared mechanism is indeed functional and when the arm is moved, the Earth rotates and so does the moon. The horizon plate is metal, black with gold lettering, identifying seasons, months, and zodiacs. Quite intriguing and very solid! We believe this model to be about 1907 because of the terrestrial globe mounted onto the tellurium. It is a c 3.5âe diameter sp with paper gores and very detailed map. Africa is pre Belgium Congo, which was established in 1908. The globe manufacture CF Weber changed to Weber Costello in 1907, which would make this a very early Weber Costello product. Note the details of the ornate Art Nouveau style claw foot base, very similar to Rand McNally Globe mounts, which perhaps shared the supplier of the mount. The embossed letters on the three emblems are difficult to read, we could make out COLUMBIA on one and SCHOOL SUPPLY on another, the third one looks like INDPLS though weâe(tm)re not a 100% sure. Description: The globe itself is covered with 12 individual gores of paper representing a very detailed map. It is mounted upon gears on one end of the tellurium. The moon is mounted into a lower gear within the same mechanism. The highest point of the tellurium is at the tip of the terrestrial sp at 14âe. Total length is about 20.5âe The entire tellurium is very heavy and solid. Condition: The mechanism of the tellurium is strong and functional. It appears that t have been several repairs, please see pictures. The mount of the moon is removable, which looks more like damage than purpose. The candle holder is present, though we think a reflector may be missing. Also not sure if the handle is original or any additional parts are missing. The globeâe(tm)s map is in good condition, clean and minimal rubbing, but the two hemisps have split half way around. Our specialty is terrestrial and celestial globes, not tellurium.
