A grand 1891 Rand McNally Art Nouveau Terrestrial Globe This Globe is a fine example of superb craftsmanship which elevated Rand McNally to be one of the great Chicago Globe makers of the late 1800âe(tm)s and early 1900âe(tm)s. Attention to detail is evident throughout the mounting. Note the lionâe(tm)s paw footing and splendid Art Nouveau lines with a copperized finish. The perfectly aged patina of the map provides a warm glow and highlights superb map skills of the past. This globe offers visual history by displaying Empires one can only read of today. Austro-Hungarian and Ottoman Empire, German colonies, Constantinople, Christiana , St. Petersburg and a young United States with Indian Territory are identified, just to name a few. In addition to having a well maintained map, the horizon ring to this globe is present and intactâe¦.which is quite rare. A true masterpiece of an era long gone! About the manufacture: Rand McNally & Co. 1856 (1880 globe production) - current Chicago William Rand opens his first print shop in 1856, hires McNally, an Irish Immigrant, in 1858. In 1868, the two establish a partnership and the name Rand McNally & Co. As a print shop they produce the newspaper for the Chicago Tribune as well as timetables, travel guides and tickets for the fast growing railroad industry. In 1872, the company pioneered cerography, an innovative wax-engraving print technique, enabling to follow world changes in print quickly and more economically. As a result, event though not having made globes themselves until 1880, by the end of the late 1800âe(tm)s Rand McNally produced globe gores not just for their own models, but for many of the other Chicago Globe makers. Rand McNally is best known for their travel maps but also still produces globes to this day, mainly for the educational market. Description: The globe itself is made of plaster, covered with 12 individual, hand mounted paper gores. The map has beautiful coloring and includes cold and warm exothermic lines, equinoctial line, superb detailed mountain ranges, rivers and cities. The 12âe globe is mounted into a full meridian, which is cradled by a fork. The meridian is movable within the fork. The base is a fine testament to the art nouveau movement with its detail in form of lion paws and the letters R, MC and Co embossed in oval shapes onto the base. The entire mount is made of cast iron with a âeoecopperizedâe finish. An attractive statement, no doubt! The horizon ring has the original paper overlay, identifying zodiacs, seasons, months and more. Total height of this piece of art is about 22.5 inches. The globe itself has a 12âe diameter, with horizon ring the width extends to 17 inches. Condition: This globe has been well maintained. Even though not perfect, it is in very good condition for its age. Colors are rich, details crisp. Soiling is minimal and only a few minor scuffsmarks. No wear to either axis point, no indentation. The mount is in superb condition. Most wear is to the horizon ring in form of scuffing and wear to the wood itself and wear to the paper overlay. Please make sure you view pictures. Original screws to attach the horizon ring to the mount are not present. A piece of tape is attached to the horizon paper. Please see pictures in detail. The age of the Globe has been determined by the political borders displayed, which are as follows : Europe : The Austro Hungarian, Ottoman, Russian and German Empire are identified as well as the Metropolitan cities of Christiana, Constantinople , St Petersburg and more. Middle East/Asia: The extend of the Ottoman Empire is evident. The Arabian Peninsula is identified as such, no Saudi Arabia , Iran , Iraq . Africa : German Colonies are shown (lost at the treaty of Versailles post WW1), Kongo Free State is identified (became Belgian Congo in 1908).
