A Collection of magnificent History 1870 - 1880s - 1914 This collection of terrestrial globes represent political history of 1870 to 1914. Even though the map of each artifact has suffered in past 140 years, we find them still to be of tremendous decorative value. Highlighting the ornate Victorian Design period, the playful Art Nouveau era and Art Deco Movement, these models are sophisticated Design pieces, demanding attention in any setting. Note the exquisite base of the tallest Globe made by Schedler c 1880’s. A classic Art Nouveau styled piece, combining wood and cast iron, a design exclusive to Schedler, therefore quite rare. Joseph Schedler, an immigrant from Germany found the company circa 1860 and was carried on by Herman Schedler in 1880 until about 1890. Within this period the company produced some of the finest models, in design and map detail. As a matter of fact, Schedler’s sophisticated and elegant spheres won prizes at the Paris International Exhibition in 1867, the American Institute Fair in 1869 and the Vienna International Exhibition in 1873. We believe this model to be a late 1880s model as the cartouche identifies H. Schedler (second Generation). Congo State is visible (1889-1908) in Africa as are German colonies (1885-1918). The map itself does not provide too many clues due to extensive wear. However, the manufacture ceased activity during the 1890’s. The petite model of a female statue holding the globe was made c 1870 by famed German Globemaker Ludwig Jul. Heymann of Berlin . Ludwig Julius Heymann was an active Berlin Globe maker from c 1860 to 1903. During this time his model offerings diversified from simple wood mounts to ornate figurines such as this Victorian beauty.Due to the growth of his company he expanded into Leipzig and began to offer models in many different languages. Eventually Heymann employed Henry Lange, who was known for his detailed mapping and who had been a student of Brockhaus (of Leipzig ). Heymann globes are highly appreciated as they displayed early on significant details such as the Great Wall of China and the up keep of explorations to the North and South Pole. We have dated the globe at c 1870, based on the political borders displayed: Europe shows the AustroHungarian Empire, established in 1868, Budapest is still shown in its old name Pest (change 1872). The third globe is an American Weber Costello Model with an English map, printed by Bacon & Co of London and was sold by Hammet of New York c 1914. This Artifact is the “newest” model in the collection and displayes the the political borders of c 1914. The Russian Empire shows former St Petersburg as Petrograd , which carried this name from 1914-18. The city of Oslo is still shown as Christiana, name change occurred also in 1914. The map is very much a glimpse of a specific moment in time, just before the Great War and the end of many Imperial Empires. This is a fine opportunity to obtain three decorative pieces of history, spanning from c 1870 to 1914. Due to the poor condition of the maps we have not placed a reserve on this offering, Though one should not underestimate the significant value of these artifacts, perhaps consider restoration. We find this group to be a sophisticated representation of the past as is, including all “battle scars” of the past. Imagine if these elegant time capsules could speak…the tales they could tell…………………………. Description: Each globe consists of a paste board and plaster sphere covered by 12 individual, hand applied paper gores. Each ornate and exceptionally detailed base is made of heavy cast-iron, offering a two tone bronze and copper finish. The Heymann globe has a diameter of about 5 inches with a total height of 12 inches. The Weber Costello has a diameter of 8 inches with a total height of about 14.5 inches. The Sche...
